How to Make a WordPress Child Theme

(Last Updated On: January 1, 2018)

The WordPress theme update problem

child themeFrom time to time a WordPress theme will be updated for reasons of security, etc. This can create a huge problem. You may have made changes such as colour, fonts, etc. When the theme is updated, all of these changes will be destroyed. You solve this by creating a child theme.

A child theme is a theme that inherits the functionality and styling of another theme, called the parent theme. When a theme is updated, only the parent is updated.

You will have made you styling changes to the child theme. You may want to add HTML code into your header. These will not be affected by the update. Your WordPress page will still have the same styling changes.
